TRANSPARENCY NOTICE · AS OF AUGUST 2026

A fair comparison

novolto offers its own electricity readers and solutions using partner devices. Therefore, this comparison is not intended to declare a single device the overall winner, but rather to show which solution fits your meter, your existing technology, and your desired control system.

The comparison covers meter compatibility, measuring principle, data access, contract commitment, and availability as a novolto solution or bundle. Time-dependent pricing is marked as of August 2026.

WHY METER DATA IS CRUCIAL

The immersion heater must know the actual surplus.

The output of your PV system and your household consumption change constantly. Without current measurement data, the controller does not know whether electricity is being fed into the grid or drawn from it.

A suitable measuring device provides this information. Only then can an immersion heater operate specifically when usable surplus solar power is actually available.

  • 01

    Which meter is installed?

Note the manufacturer and exact model designation. Also, check whether an optical interface is present and if a PIN or activation is required for full data output.

  • 02

    What equipment is available?

Check whether a Tibber Pulse, PowerOpti, Shelly, or another measuring device is already present. Existing hardware can determine the most sensible solution.

  • 03

    What should be controlled?

Should only consumption be displayed, should surplus solar power be detected, or should an immersion heater be automatically controlled? Not every solution is equally suitable for every goal.

    NOVOLTO

    novolto Sense (Germany only)

Novolto Sense is supported for Germany only and is not offered through this storefront. For other markets, check a supported Shelly, Tibber Pulse or poweropti setup, or a suitable MQTT-based measurement solution.

    PARTNER SOLUTION

    Tibber Pulse IR

A good fit if: a Tibber Pulse IR is already available or you want to read a compatible digital meter.

Good to know: The readings are visible in the Tibber app; a Tibber electricity contract is not required for the Pulse itself.

  • powerfox company logo

    PARTNER SOLUTION

    PowerOpti

Often a good fit if: you already have a poweropti or your digital meter is on the current powerfox compatibility list.

Check beforehand: optical interface, meter model, and data release.

  • ALTERNATIVE MEASUREMENT

    Shelly energy meter

Often suitable when: the measurement is to be taken directly in the electrical distribution board.

Check beforehand: which Shelly measuring device is suitable for your setup and supported by novolto.

  • COMPATIBILITY

Does the device fit your meter?

Manufacturer, model, interface, and the meters supported by the respective reader are crucial. Therefore, always check the current compatibility list.

  • INTEGRATION

Are the data reaching the controller?

Check how the measured values are transmitted and whether your desired novolto setup can use this data.

  • INSTALLATION

Read head or measurement in the distribution board?

Optical read heads scan a suitable meter interface. Shelly energy meters, on the other hand, measure via current transformers in the electrical distribution board, depending on the model.

  • SETUP A

    Suitable meter, no reader yet

Check your electricity meter model and the requirements of your chosen Shelly, Tibber Pulse or poweropti setup. A suitable system connected through MQTT is another option. Compatibility depends on your meter, device and configuration.

  • SETUP B

    Tibber Pulse or PowerOpti available

First, clarify whether the existing device can be used in the planned novolto setup before purchasing additional hardware.

  • SETUP C

    Optical interface unsuitable

Check an alternative measurement in the electrical distribution board. Selection and installation should match the electrical setup of your system.

BEFORE PURCHASE

The right solution in two steps

1 · Check your meter and setup

  • Meter manufacturer and exact model
  • Is an optical interface present and accessible?
  • Is a PIN or interface activation needed for additional readings?
  • Which measurement devices or energy management systems are already installed?
  • Do you need monitoring, surplus detection or automatic heater control?

2 · Choose a supported measurement solution

  • Tibber Pulse IR: an optical reader for supported digital meters. Check the provider requirements and novolto integration for your specific setup.
  • poweropti: an optical reader for supported digital meters. Check the exact meter model and device version before ordering.
  • Shelly: supported energy meters can measure power in the electrical installation. Check device support and use a qualified electrician where required.
  • MQTT: a suitable measurement or energy management system can provide data and control through a supported local integration.

Check current prices and availability with the supplier. Compatibility matters more than a short-term price difference. Novolto Sense is offered for Germany only.

Frequently Asked Questions about Electricity Meters

Answers regarding compatibility, optical head, and integration

Here you will find the most important answers regarding the selection and use of an electricity meter reader.

Compatibility depends on the specific reader as well as the manufacturer and model of the electricity meter. Always check the exact model designation in the current compatibility overview before ordering a device.

No. Tibber confirms that the Pulse IR can also be used without a Tibber electricity contract. To use it with novolto, you need a functioning Pulse setup and must grant novolto the necessary access to your measurement data.

Yes, depending on the reader, a modern metering device with a suitable optical interface may be sufficient; an intelligent metering system with a smart meter gateway is not strictly required. The deciding factors are the meter model, the interface, and the compatibility list of the respective reader.

An infrared read head is attached to the optical interface of a suitable digital electricity meter. It reads the measured values provided there and transmits them to the connected system. Which values are available depends on the meter model and its activation.

First, check whether your meter just needs to be activated or if another compatible optical reader is an option. If optical reading is not possible, an energy meter in the electrical distribution board may be an alternative, depending on the system.
